Where are they now?
We are very proud of our past members and we want to feature them and their accomplishments after graduating the University of Iowa and First Generation Iowa. As we contact more alumni, expect to read more snippets, written by the alumni themselves! If you are a past FGI member, or just a first generation graduate from the University of Iowa, we would love to hear from you. Feel free to email us a paragraph or so on what you are doing now, how your life has turned out, or any bits of information/advice you are comfortable sharing with current first generation students.
Charter Vice President of FGI 2009-10
Since FGI, I have started working at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. I am the Donor Coordinator for the Adult Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Team. This job is great because I continue to learn something new every day. I also get to talk to patients and family donors. I feel like I really make a difference in these patients' lives. I am still planning on applying to Medical School. I hope to someday become a Stem Cell Transplant Physician. My advice is to always follow your dreams. Never stop until you reach them. If you do not succeed the first time, keep going! Always try to improve yourself and never stop learning and being creative!
Charter Webmaster of FGI 2009-12
Since being on the executive board for First Generation Iowa starting in 2009, I received my Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Mathematics in 2011. I then received my Master's Degree in Computer Science in 2012. I am now an Application Developer for Kirkwood Community College. FGI helped me a lot both as a member and an officer. It helped me develop skills that I used during both my graduate year and my interview process. It also helped me realize that I have a unique situation in being a first generation student, and that I have already overcome many challenges along the way. My best advice to any first generation student is to take every advantage of all the resources available to you; this will make the journey much easier and much more fun.
